Overcoming Holiday Stress that May Lead to Bedwetting

I probably sound like a broken record to my family, colleagues and friends, but I can’t believe the winter holiday season is upon us. I feel like I’m just now settling into the swing of back-to-school routines with my three kids. Yet, pretty soon the hustle, bustle and chaos of the holiday season will be here.

Don’t get me wrong — I love the holiday celebrations with my extended family and friends. And, of course, seeing the extra-big smiles on my children’s faces because they can sleep late and are homework-free for a few weeks is quite a treat. Still, I know as a pediatrician and mom that even though most children complain about going to school and their busy schedules, kids thrive and feel more in control when they have a predictable routine to follow. The truth is change, whether good or bad, can be very stressful for all of us, especially young kids.

Staying up later than usual, eating in excess during holiday celebrations, even the social strains of entertaining out-of-town guests in your home can impact your emotional and physical well-being. In short, it can be fun but exhausting. Now think of this from a child’s perspective. The added stress may impact them more than you may have imagined.

Take bedwetting (or nighttime wetting), for example. Stress can indirectly impact a child who already wets the bed. In fact, nighttime wetting accidents may increase around holiday time due to changes in your child’s schedule.

Children that wet the bed may feel more anxious and worried and may even act out during the day because they are so concerned that their nighttime wetting secret may be discovered.

So what can be done to help? Try some of these simple suggestions:

  • Reassure your child that it’s not his fault and that you will help him deal with the issue until it is resolved.
  • Hold off on salty and sugary snacks at night, as they cause the body to want to drink extra water to quench thirst.
  • If your child wants a sleepover, suggest having a friend stay at your house. There is some comfort in familiar surroundings. Also, you might suggest a sleepover at a close relative’s home, like grandma or a cousin, who would not be judgmental if a nighttime wetting accident occurred.
