When Will My Child be Dry at Night? 3 Tips to Survive the Wait
If your child is consistently using the potty during the day, but not yet always dry at night, guess what? You’ve got a potty-trained kiddo! Nighttime dryness is a completely different process, mostly controlled by your child’s physical development. Many typically-developing, healthy children don’t reach nighttime dryness until the age of 6, 7, 8, or beyond. Here are some tips to help you survive the wait.
1. Work with your pediatrician, just to make sure everything’s A-OK. Usually, all is well. But there are a few things the doc can help with including – surprise! Constipation. Constipation can interfere with nighttime dryness, because the pressure can interfere with the signals that your child has to take a nighttime trip to the potty. So, check with your pediatrician to make sure everything is moving smoothly.
2. Ease up on sugary nighttime drinks. Extra sugar puts pee-pee production into overtime. But don’t restrict nighttime fluids in general – your child will automatically slow down urine production when their body is ready to be dry at night. No amount of fluid restriction can control that developmental process – and we don’t want to risk dehydration.
