Find out what causes bedwetting.
It doesn’t matter if you’re short or tall, or have straight or curly hair. Bedwetting can happen to jocks, artists and even kids who play computer games–any kid. One thing everyone who wets the bed does have in common? They can’t wait until they outgrow it! Until then, it helps to understand the different reasons why:

A Growing Bladder. Sometimes it’s simply because your bladder hasn’t grown as fast as the rest of your body. Don’t worry, ‘cause it’ll all catch up! In other cases, a special muscle in the bladder (the sphincter) isn’t as strong as it should be yet.

Heredity. Just like you got your Uncle Joe’s long legs or your Aunt Sarah’s long lashes–you just might have inherited bedwetting from someone in your family, too! If your dad wet the bed when he was a kid, you’ve got a 40% chance of wetting the bed. Both parents wet the bed as kids? Your chances go up to 70%.

Heavy Sleeperzzzzzz. Do you sleep through earthquakes and rock concerts? Lots of kids sleep so soundly that the urge to “go” isn’t enough to get them up and at-em when it’s time. Part of your brain is supposed to stay awake during sleep to say “WAKE UP!” when it’s time to go to the bathroom–and for now, it’s not doing that. Hang in there, it’ll happen.

Hormones. Each night the body lets go of a special thing called an anti-diuretic hormone (ADH) that slows down the production of urine (pee) in your kidneys. Some kids who wet the bed are in a stage where they produce too little of this hormone (for now–not forever!).
Bedwetting runs in families.
