Expert Q&A

I am a divorced father of two beautiful daughters. I was a bedwetter until about age 12. My 7-year-old daughter is a chronic bedwetter. Is it unusual for a 7-year-old girl to wet the bed? Should she have grown out of this by now on her own?

Answer

Ten percent of 7-year-olds are wet at night. Most children who wet the bed have at least one parent or another close relative who had the same problem as a child. Fifteen percent of children become dry every year on their own, with most following the same pattern as their parents. As a result, your daughter may be wet at night for many years before she overcomes the problem naturally. Because there is no way to predict when she will become dry, I recommend that you start a bedwetting program if she's motivated to work on managing bedwetting.
