Can wearing protection every night cause children to have infections?
Dr. Wolffe Nadoolman answers:
I’m Dr. Wolffe from the GoodNites® NiteLite Panel. This is a tough question because I’ve never seen anything like this in my practice. Of course, the infection risk is much lower when someone is out of diapers, but I have no definite answer on if nighttime protection increases the risk. There are two kinds of infections that come to mind, and the first is an external skin infection due to the environment of nighttime protection, which has more moisture and is warmer. Products like GoodNites are carefully engineered to pull moisture away from the skin, which is very helpful at reducing this possibile infection. The second kind of infection is an urinary tract infection. It’s possible that using protective underwear at night could increase the risk of a UTI, compared to those who are dry at night, but this hasn’t been an issue in my experience. If your child is experiencing irritation, I would connect with your pediatrician.
