Week 4 – Just say NO!
No is a word that many of us could use some practice saying. We say yes to everything because we think we should be able to 'do it all.' Remember that you can't be everything to everybody. Saying yes to everything means being overbooked, overstressed and anxious. Don't feel guilty about saying no - and don't feel you need an excuse. Saying no can be an empowering word. Read more tips

How can I tell my mom and dad that I wet the bed at night? I'm 15 years old.

Answer

You need to understand that this is most likely a physical problem. It is often genetic and results from having a small bladder or poor muscle control (of the bladder sphincter). There are many medical treatments that can help.

Start the conversation by asking if anyone in your family wet the bed after they should have been toilet trained. If they tell you about Uncle George who wet when he was 11 years old, that will give you a great opening. If they say “No,” you still have a good opening. Just say, “That's strange because I do, and I've heard it can be a physical or genetic problem.”

You might want to do your own research by looking up “enuresis” on your favorite search engine or visiting the National Kidney Foundation's Web site. If your parents tend to be harsh and critical, find an adult in the family who you think will be understanding to be with you when you have your conversation.
