When my daughter was small I bought her a book on hand shadow puppets. A few times a week, instead of the usual bedtime story, we would set up a lamp, snuggle in bed and practice our shadow puppets. We got pretty good at it! We went from learning the basic turkey shape to dozens of animals and people. Of course they all got named and little stories about them told. Lots of giggles, lots of snuggles and unforgettable memories. More than once something that bothered her during the day came out and got resolved with some shadow puppet folks. The last shape was always the same. We each made a shadow heart and intertwined them. The ONLY way to end Shadow Puppet Night!

Most people would describe my husband as a man of few words. He is incredibly thoughtful and kind, but very reserved. That is, except when putting our kids to bed. For years, he wove intricate tales about Detective Molly and her animal sidekicks for our daughter, who is now seven. Currently, he spends each night telling our four-year-old son stories about Bruce, a young boy who encounters many challenges getting along at school. These adventures mirror what our son is struggling with at his school, so he learns how Bruce handles things like bullies, following directions, and getting to the bathroom in time. They love spending that special time with Dad and the stories always have a happy ending!
